Len McCluskey

Trade Unionist

Len McCluskey was General Secretary of Unite the Union 2011-2021.

He became a full-time union official for the Transport and General Workers' Union (T&GWU) in 1979.

“There are literally hundreds of strikes taking place and many of them are successful. That breeds confidence in workers elsewhere.”

A Labour Party member, Len was a strong supporter of Jeremy Corbyn when he was Labour Party leader.

He grew up in a working-class family in Liverpool. His experiences as a child there left a lasting impression on him.

Len has described how episodes he witnessed in his young life shaped his ardent support for the NHS.

He describes himself as a socialist, although he has also said he has ‘resigned’ himself to the ‘hard left’ label.

Len always packs a book of poetry when he goes one holiday.

He failed his O-Level English exam twice before finally getting a pass.

Unfortunately his exam record barred him from studying English at A-Level.

But McCluskey still went on to develop a love for both poetry and Shakespeare during his 20s.
